Start of my designing

This is a start to deciding how I want to design my book which would be viewed to people who are interested in the history of Radcliffe. I first starting created the title of the book cover to experiment what looks good and what looks bad. I think that the third text on the image looks the best because it is the brightest and catches attention easier.

I am going to Radcliffe Tower to take more images of the castle since I do not have images on the college computer, I will try to capture more angles and images of the castle - zoomed in and out - so I have a range and choice of what images I want to experiment with. For home study, I will create different primary materials to experiment, the main material that I will create is the old paper effect that I will involve in my book. This will be a good idea because if gives a scent of the history.

artwork

I like this artwork because it was created in the 15th century and this is the type of piece I have to look at to expand what I need to design. I like the text the most and they way it is laid out because it can emphasise typography, from my research this image involves a famous female who was around in the 4th or 5th century. Since then artists have created art pieces related to her and her life style, this piece was created around the 15th century.

This isn't the castle that i'm looking at however, it was still standing in the 15th century and I like the way it has been drawn. This could be an idea that I take on - by using drawing skills and photoshop edits to make this effect. I mostly like the outer part of the image, the way it shown it has been drawn on paper.

This is also another drawing made in the 15th Century however this building was located in York. I like the drawing style the most because it shows how it is actually built and shows the full image of the buildings - rather than a broken down building shown where it has been destroyed throughout the years.

Research on old graphic design

Graphic design was first discovered in the early 1920's when William Dwiggins, but before that it was first known by actually writing and creating designs with materials. People have been designing and creating artwork for centuries but in the 20th century, computers were invented and since then people have invented and expanded with programs to create art. There are different types of graphic design, it is split up into different categories: graphic, typography, interior, illustration.
First graphic design piece in 1922

The Book of Kells is related to the image on the right because they use the same similarities, the Book of Kells is a Gospel book also known as the Book of Columbia. The book itself is written by hand and is made by calfskin created in the 11th century.

Graphic design in the 21st century can become very complex, you are able to scan in materials to include, Photoshop, Illustrator or you can hand draw it. Many graphic designers are successful by creating 'vintage typography' or 'old graphic design' pieces related to actual history events.

Proposal

For this project I have to make myself a proposal of what I am going to achieve and how, I have decided to make a book cover dedicated to the Radcliffe tower and the history of the 15th Century. To do this, I will design the front and back cover on Photoshop and start to create a little book about the information. I have to design the plates on Photoshop if I decide to do that instead because there are no other softwares which can help what I am doing. I will add images and text to the plate - to make the plate more visual I will have to create a simple background so that the tower has an audience.

Research

Radcliffe is a small town located in North Greater Manchester with a population of approximately 32,000. I will be researching history from the 15th century that happened inside the Radcliffe area, there are remains of the Radcliffe tower which was said to be built in the 11th century.  The owner known to re-build in the 15th century in Radcliffe was man named James Radcliffe, he was a wealthy man who lived in Radcliffe. Due to his wealthiness, James Radcliffe re-built the tower using materials like timber frames and stone however he could only afford to build one. James Radcliffe decided he did not need the tower so he rented out the building to farmers for their animals. On the sketches, there has always been a mystery about the towers because the King had granted him permission to build two towers however only one was found in evidence.

Sketch of the inside of Radcliffe Tower in the 15th Century

There was an arranged period where they were able to get permission to look and dig the remains of Radcliffe Tower, this took place in 1980.

In 2013/14, a museum and an archaeology company have come together to dig up and investigate more evidence to find further information of what was there in the 15 the century period. There will be an opportunity for volunteers to join in with the dig and improve the safety surrounding the building.

In this article, it tells the audience about the success which will proceed in 'late Summer or early Autumn 2013' Secondly, it goes on about the funding towards the project "the heritage lottery fund has confirmed it's final approve to a £276,000 towards a £461,000 project."

Beginning of the project

Mood board of 15th century artwork

The brief for our first project in the second year is about digital storytelling involving 15th century art, I will have to look at periods in the 15th century and talk about what happened and why. The periods that I will have to look at are: the beginning of the Renaissance Era, Dark Ages; the birth of the Age of Discovery, naval ships and navigation methods that create new trade routes and route partners, birth of print making (Johann Gutenberg's invention.) I will have to pick a route to go down to create a piece for this project, I have picked graphics and photography because I would like to take images and turn them into graphic design pieces. I will research information about the 15th century and use some actual information and fictional throughout the project.

To begin the project, I have created a mood board on artwork and paintings which were created in the 15th century period. I have also started to create a timeline of the 15th century so that I get an idea of what happened at what time. It will also remind me what order the events happened throughout the century.
